Road to the Home Opener 001: A Championship Rewind

When the 2026 Northern Super League schedule came out, it immediately grabbed everyone’s attention. The league set up a massive clash for the very first game of the season: the reigning NSL Champions, Vancouver Rise FC, against the NSL Shield winners, AFC Toronto, right here at Swangard Stadium.

Even though both clubs are still young, their rivalry is already fierce. They’ve delivered thrilling scorelines, last-minute equalizers, and a hunger for glory that all came to a head one night in Toronto just four months ago…

That Night in Toronto

November 15. BMO Field. The inaugural NSL Final.

Rise FC arrived at that match showing just how tough they could be. They had survived a difficult Ottawa Rapid FC in the semi-finals, pulling themselves back from the edge of defeat not once, but twice. An 84th-minute goal from Holly Ward forced penalty kicks, and then Morgan McAslan made two spectacular saves to turn the shootout around, setting up Sofia Hagman’s winning kick.

The final asked even more of them. They were up against the Shield winners, AFC Toronto, the best team of the regular season. These two sides were almost impossible to separate that year, with two wins each and a draw in their head-to-head record. Toronto had won their most recent meeting by a comfortable margin, but Rise still had a perfect record at BMO Field after a 1-0 victory there earlier that summer, even playing with a player down.

Both teams had reasons to believe. Both knew they couldn’t afford to lose.

One thing was clear: crowning the first champion would require something truly special.

A Stormy Start

AFC Toronto came out firing. Fueled by the roar of their home crowd, Kaylee Hunter – who had come up through the Rise FC Academy – scored first in the 20th minute. Toronto had all the momentum and looked close to adding another goal, but Morgan McAslan – who would later be named Player of the Match – made save after instinctive save. The goalkeeper had a feeling that even though her team was behind, this was her night.

“I was like, ‘This is my time,’” McAslan said after the match. “I thought that this was my moment to show up for my team. That I could step up, make a big save, and help my team.”

Lifted by that spirit from their goalkeeper, Rise refused to break. Throughout the regular season, they had made a habit of fighting their way back into games, living up to the club motto “Stronger by Nature.” But this time, nature itself seemed to get involved.

A second lightning warning came in the 38th minute, forcing a 30-minute delay. Whether it was luck, destiny, or just perfect timing, the break gave Rise the chance to catch their breath, regroup, and come stronger for the second half.

“That was a restart for us,” explained Rise FC Head Coach Anja Heiner-Möller. “We had to make it through seven minutes, and then we had a new restart. And that was important for us [for the second half].”

A Historic Turnaround

After the delay, Rise FC looked like a different team. Their passing became sharper, their attack grew more dangerous, and confidence started flowing across the pitch. In the 54th minute, a corner kick from Nikki Stanton was sent toward the near post, and snuck in to give Rise the equalizer they needed. The final half-hour then became a desperate race for a winner.

Then came a moment that felt like it was written for the big stage. In the 68th minute, homegrown star Holly Ward raced down the left side, cut into the box, and curled a left-footed shot into the far corner. The stadium erupted. After trailing for half the game, Rise FC had turned it around and taken the lead.

The team then dug in, holding off wave after wave of Toronto attacks. Every blocked shot felt like a held breath. Every minute stretched on forever until the final whistle finally blew.

The comeback was complete. History was made. That night, Rise FC proved that belief, grit, and sticking together can turn any situation around.

“The resilience in this team is amazing,” Heiner-Möller said after the final. “For us to come back from that [losing position] and finish it up with a 2-1 win, I’m just so proud of the team.”

Rivalry Reforged

Four months later, both squads have new faces and fresh tactics, but the mission is still the same. One side wants to repeat the triumph. The other is chasing redemption. Neither is willing to come up short.

And it all begins at the home opener, where the stage is set for an epic NSL Final rematch on April 24 at Swangard Stadium.

Champion versus champion. Rival versus rival. Everything on the line.
